Afternoon Tea with the Consul
General
27 September
2012 Consul General, Jim
Dickmeyer makes remarks to Toronto’s Diaspora journalists at his
residence during afternoon tea.
Leading
journalists from Toronto’s Diaspora communities gathered on September
27th at the Consul General’s residence for an afternoon of baklava,
cookies, and tea. True to Toronto’s vibrant multicultural societies –
the journalists came from nations as diverse as Iran, El Salvador,
Pakistan, Japan, Nepal, India, Russia and Ethiopia. All guests had the
opportunity to mingle with Consulate staff including the new Consul
General, Jim Dickmeyer. The
journalists also had the opportunity to meet one another. Ideas were
exchanged as often as business cards, as the media professionals discussed
their respective publications. Freelance Iranian-Canadian journalist,
Mohammad-Bagher Samimi, spent the afternoon chatting with Nobuo Iromoto
from the Nikka Times, an online Japanese-Canadian publication. Maria
Vorobieva from Ethnic Channels Group noted, “It was good to greet my
colleagues from various media outlets in such intimate and friendly
settings.” The Consul
General made brief remarks welcoming the guests, and praising their work
in the community. With more than half of Toronto’s population born
outside of Canada, the Diaspora media serve as vital channels of
communications throughout the country’s immigrant communities. Marija Dumancic - Media Assistant Press Office - U.S. Consulate General Toronto |
